Giờ trả bài tập làm văn luôn là giờ sôi động nhất vì thầy giáo thường đọc cho cả lớp nghe hai bài, bài được điểm cao nhất và bài có điểm thấp nhất. Tất nhiên, bài cao điểm được những tràng pháo tay và bài điểm thấp là những trận cười, chưa kể sau đó còn hình thành nên nhiều giai thoại từ những câu mà thầy nhận xét là “què, cụt, thiếu sức thuyết phục…”.
Và giai thoại này đôi khi còn lan truyền ra cả các lớp khác mà tác giả của nó chỉ còn cách là lấy cả hai tay mà che mặt lại. Cả lớp đứa nào cũng hồi hộp khi xấp bài trên tay thầy đã vơi nhiều rồi mà bài của mình còn chưa thấy đâu.
Hôm nay, như thường lệ, thầy mở cặp lấy xấp bài ra là cả lớp nhấp nhỏm. Với đề ra là “Hãy kể lại một kỹ niệm sâu sắc của em”, thầy đã nói rằng lớp có bốn mươi học sinh thì chắc chắn sẽ có bốn mươi kỷ niệm khác nhau, không như khi chứng minh trích đoạn nào đó bị thầy chê là đơn điệu, chúng tôi thường chống chế “Thầy ơi, học cùng nhau thì làm sao mà dẫn chứng không trùng lập nhau được”
Khác thường, là thầy đưa xấp bài cho trưởng lớp chỉ giữ lại một bài. Chỉ một! Đứa nào cũng nhón người nghểnh cổ cho cao lên một chút để cố nhìn cho ra tên của ai và được mấy điểm nhưng không được. Bài hay nhất? Dở nhất?
Giỏi văn nhất lớp là Kim Chi. Nhưng rồi dự đoán của chúng tôi tiêu tan khi Kim Chi với tay nhận bài của mình từ tay trưởng lớp. Vậy là thầy giữ lại bài dở nhất rồi! Cả lớp chuyển ánh mắt nhìn về phía Cường với tiếng cười khúc khích. Cường thường có những câu văn kiểu như “Đi một ngày đàng học một sàng khôn, vậy nên chúng ta phải đi nhiều ngày hơn nữa”…Nhưng rồi Cường cũng nhận được bài của mình.
Vậy thì của ai? Hay? Dở? Làm sao biết trước được bài sẽ đọc lên hôm nay là của ai! Trời, môn văn…Có khi bài trước mới được 6 điểm với lời phê “Lối hành văn trong sáng, nên đọc nhiều để dẫn chứng phong phú hơn” thì bài sau nhận được ngay điểm 4 với lời phê “Quá lan man dông dài!” Điểm bảy môn văn của thầy là một ước mơ xa! Ngay cả Kim Chi cũng nói vậy.
Chúng tôi nhìn theo tay của trưởng lớp cho đến khi bài cuối cùng được phát ra. Chỉ mình Dũng là chưa có. Không hẹn mà cả lớp đều ngạc nhiên nhìn về phía Dũng, tác giả bài văn trên tay thầy. Tránh cái nhìn của cả lớp, Dũng ngoảnh ra cửa sổ. Không thấy mặt Dũng nhưng có thể thấy rõ hai vành tai và cổ của Dũng đỏ ửng.
Dũng là học sinh trường huyện mới chuyển về lớp tôi được hai tháng nay. Không có gì nổi trội, nơi Dũng cái gì cũng bình thường và chưa có gì tỏ vẻ ra là đặc biệt về môn văn cả. Vậy mà điểm 8. Phải, điểm 8! Chúng tôi nhìn rõ số 8 đỏ chói trong ô điểm khi thầy đưa tay sửa lại cặp kính trên sống mũi, cử chỉ quen thuộc mỗi khi thầy xúc động. Giọng thầy trầm trầm:
“Kỷ niệm sâu sắc nhất của em là khi nhận được thư của ba em.
Nhà em nghèo lắm nhưng ba má cho em ra phố học để sau này em có thể làm được điều gì đó tốt đẹp hơn. Cho em ra phố, ngoài việc phải kiếm tiền làm thêm để có tiền trang trải chuyện học hành của em, ba em còn phải làm những việc mà khi ở nhà em có thể đỡ đần được cho gia đình. Chưa bao giờ ba má viết cái gì cả. Hồi em còn ở nhà, mỗi khi cần viết thư về quê hay viết đơn từ là em viết…”
Thầy ngừng đọc, nhìn cả lớp:
– Các em, thầy sẽ viết lại nguyên văn lá thư của ba bạn Dũng lên bảng cho chúng ta cùng đọc.
Một chuyện lạ! Tất cả chúng tôi hồi hộp tò mò từng chữ hiện ra dưới tay thầy.
“Con iu thươn của ba. Chìu hôm qua ba kiu người báng con heo đễ có tiềng gưởi cho con con nhớ nhà khôn? Cã nhà nhớ con nhìu lấm cố họch nge chừn nào mùa màn song ba má xẻ ra thăm con”
Lá thư vọn vẹn có 45 chữ.
Khi thầy quay lại thì Dũng đã úp mặt xuống bàn, hai vai run run. Mắt thầy cũng hoe đỏ.
Cả lớp im phăng phắc trước lá thư đầy lỗi chính tả trên bảng, lá thư yêu thương và gởi gấm của một người cha vốn chỉ quen với cày cuốc lần đầu cầm bút viết thư cho con.
