Vừa rồi, đại gia đình tôi có việc, tôi phải đứng ra có đôi lời thưa gởi với họ hàng quan khách, trong đó có một ý nhỏ là chúng tôi chỉ là những “người tầm thường” nên những ứng xử, những hành trạng cũng chỉ được mong là “tầm thường” như cảo như thảo dung dị và mộc mạc, “tầm thường” mà tự nhiên nhẹ nhàng như cỏ như cây vô danh tầm phào “vô tư” hiện hữu giữa đất trời. Nhưng thật khó mà hình dung là thế giới này, đời sống này mà thiếu vắng những “tầm thường” như thế.

Khi “duyệt bản thảo” mấy ông em tôi lại không chịu… cái từ “tầm thường” như vậy. Bảo sửa lại là “bình thường”.

– Ừ, thì “bình thường”.

Rồi mọi chuyện cũng trôi qua… bình thường, nhẹ nhàng và vui vẻ. Tôi trôi theo dòng và chẳng còn bận tâm về cái tầm thường và bình thường trong đời sống nữa.

Khỏi cần tốn giấy mực đưa ra các lý lẽ, minh chứng, thống kê đối chiếu, so sánh; mọi người hẳn đồng thuận rằng chúng ta đang sống trong một xã hội đang phấn đấu để tiến đến… sự bình thường…

Bình thường là khi trẻ sinh ra, lớn lên, đến tuổi đi học là được cắp sách đến trường…

Cái hình ảnh đơn sơ, mộc mạc, rất “bình thường” dung dị mà đáng yêu làm sao cái buổi mai hôm ấy… “một buổi mai đầy sương thu và gió lạnh. Mẹ tôi âu yếm nắm lấy tay tôi dẫn đi trên con đường làng dài và hẹp. Con đường này tôi đã quen đi lại lắm lần, nhưng lần này tôi tự nhiên thấy lạ. Tôi ngờ rằng những cậu bé cô bé nào lên năm lên bảy, lên chín lên mười; đã từng nhìn thấy mình qua cái ảnh hình này; đã từng “đọc và học thuộc lòng” cái trích đoạn truyện ngắn này của Thanh-Tịnh thì sáu bảy chục năm sau, nếu may mắn mà còn sức khoẻ và còn được cả cái diễm phúc nắm tay đứa cháu, đứa chắt nào đó năm sáu tuổi mà dẫn đến trường trong ngày đầu tiên đi học mà chả bồi hồi nhớ lại, mà chả cảm động rưng rưng, nhoè nhoè cay cay đôi mắt…

Cái tài của Thanh-Tịnh thì đã hẳn đi một lẽ. Nhưng cái đẹp thật toàn vẹn và càng không “lấn cấn” chút nào bởi lẻ toàn không khí và văn cảnh cho chúng ta biết chắc rằng đêm qua và các đêm trước bà mẹ này đã chẳng phải thức dậy từ một đến ba giờ sáng để xếp hàng, những ông bố đã chẳng phải chen nhau từ nửa đêm rồi lấn nhau đến ngã đổ tường rào để nộp đơn nhập học cho con…

Không có ông Hoàng-Hiệp thì dân ta… “trong tim ai cũng có một giòng sông tuổi thơ…” Có cái tài hoa của ông nhạc sĩ thì chỉ làm cho các dòng sông ấy… đẹp thêm lên thôi.

Nhưng dù đẹp dù xấu, dù yên dù dữ thế nào thì những dòng sông đều có những… bến đò.

Và tôi ngờ rằng biết đâu có lúc nào đó trong đời bạn đã từng  trách móc rằng… cây đa bến cũ mà sao con đò khác đưa hoặc chính bạn lại là người bị trách nhớ bỡi… “…ba năm trước- Trên bến cùng ai đã hẹn thề… Nhưng rồi người khách tình quân ấy-Đi biệt không về với bến sông…”. Và cả bạn, cả tôi, trong đời ta, ta đã từng gặp bao nhiêu “ông lái đò” trong dặm dài của cuộc đời ta trên đất nước này; dẫu rằng thú thực đời tôi-và có lẽ đời bạn cũng thế- chưa được mấy dài đâu bạn nhỉ! Nhưng tuyệt nhiên tôi chưa hề nghe đâu đó trong “văn hoá”, “văn hiến”, trong văn khố, trong thư tịch cái thứ “giấy phép lập bến đò” và “giấy phép lái đò” đi song kèm với ông đò, cô lái, giòng sông…

Bình thường, và có lẽ là muôn thuở bình thường, là có con sông là có bến đò ngang với hình ảnh cô lái, giòng sông thơ mộng, đáng yêu hoặc lãng mạn với nét u buồn…

Rồi có lần tai nạn sẽ xảy ra  trên bến đò ngang; theo tôi cũng là chuyện bình thường. Là chuyện tất yếu vào một lúc nào đấy sẽ phải xảy ra. Như trời quang mây tạnh lâu ngày rồi sẽ có lúc có sấm có chớp, vợ chồng đầm ấm lâu năm sẽ xảy ra lúc kình khi cãi. Và cũng thật là bình thường là nhà quan phải biết làm gì để thiết thực giảm những bến đò ngang nguy hiểm hoặc sẽ có những hỗ trợ, giúp đỡ cụ thể, thật lực khi tiên liệu -chính xác nhất có thể- những thời điểm sẽ gặp phải nhiều hiểm nguy trên những bến đò chưa thể dẹp bỏ được, mà giảm sự hiểm nguy tai nạn xuống sát mức bằng không. Khi điều “bình thường” phải xảy ra đã xảy ra vì người ta không “bình thường” làm những việc “bình thường” khác; người ta đi nói những chuyện có vẻ mới lạ và bất bình thường hơn. Lạy trời cho con xin mọi việc bình thường  được diễn ra một cách bình thường là nước tiểu của con, mẫu xét nghiệm của con được đưa vào máy để cái máy nó làm một việc bình thường như vốn dĩ người ta đã sinh ra nó để làm như thế và con sẽ nhận được kết quả của con “bình thường” như hàng tỷ kẻ bệnh bình thường khác trên trái đất này mà không là bản sao kết quả của một ai đó, mà không là từ kết quả của một mẫu chẳng phải là của con. Con xin lạy thánh lạy trời mớ bái…..

Bình thường là… Nói dai, nói dài thêm nói dại- bạn bảo  thế chứ gì. Thì đúng quá đi mất.

Tôi nhớ chuyện một nhà thơ cầm tiền vợ cho đi hớt tóc-ấy là câu chuyện ông kể trong bài thơ—Đi ngang quán bạn bè hú đánh cờ độ chầu cà phê, ông thua hết tiền hớt tóc, bèn phán rằng

“…hớt tóc cạo râu là chuyện nhỏ

Ba ngàn thế giới chẳng là to…”

Ngày trước ông thơ này có khơi gợi với tôi cái chuyện “Thiền”. Bốn mươi năm sau lại nghe ông đã Thiền lắm lắm. Phận tôi thì vẫn u ơ ú ớ tầm phào… Nhưng có lẽ, cũng đã có lúc nào đấy trong đời tôi—và e có cả bạn nữa chăng—tôi cũng đã “ngộ” ra rằng, phải rồi, cạo râu là chuyện nhỏ. Mà ngay cả bảy ngàn thế giới, tám ông đại tướng, mười ba thiếm thượng thư bộ trưởng cũng chẳng là to.

Thôi thì, cứ mong sao mọi việc trên đời cứ diễn ra bình thường như nó vốn dĩ phải bình thường diễn ra như vây. Như cái cảnh bình thường và tầm thường sau đây mà tôi trích của Andre Maurois trong  “Thư ngỏ tuổi đôi mươi” qua bản dịch của Nguyễn-Hiến-Lê :

“…Đời sống chân chính… ở trong những em bé âu yếm nhìn mẹ, trong những tình nhân ghì chặt lấy nhau, trong tất cả những căn nhà nho nhỏ kia, tại đó, vợ chồng con cái ráng kiếm ăn, âu yếm nhau và du hí. Không có gì quan trọng bằng những kiếp sống tầm thường đó. Ai nấy đều đủ ăn đủ mặc, có thuốc uống khi đau, trong nhà có già có trẻ, trong sân có con gà con qué, có dàn mướp luống rau, thực là tầm thường. Vậy mà từ trước tới nay, bao nhiêu triết gia, bao nhiêu chính trị gia vẫn chưa thực hiện được cho nhân loại..”
